Total Card Payments in Volume and Value

For 2019, there are 995.4 millions of card payment transactions in Hungary(101.57 transactions per capita), an increase of 161.0 millions or 19.30% compares to 834.4 millions in 2018. This is a good growth considering the 0.43% increase in the number of payment cards in 2019. Out of these transactions, 122.2 millions or 12.28% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 12.7 millions or 11.60% compares to 109.5 millions in 2018. This is a good growth considering a 1.74% decrease on the number of credit cards issued in 2019. Majority of card payment transactions(872.8 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 148.4 millions or 20.49% compares to 724.4 millions in 2018. This is an encouraging growth since there is only a 0.78% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2019. The rest of the transactions, 0.4 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 1.1% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe. There is an increase of €4.0 billions or 20.41% to €23.6 billions(€2.41 thousands per capita) in 2019, compares to €19.6 billions in 2018. This also translates into €23.7 per card payment transaction, a small increase compares to €23.5 in 2018. Out of these transactions, €2.8 billions or 11.86% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.4 billions or 18.18% compares to €2.6 billions in 2018. This is an expected growth considering the increased in transactions volume. €20.7 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €3.8 billions or 22.49% compares to €16.9 billions in 2018, which is inline with the increase in debit card transactions volume. This is a good growth considering a 8.34% decrease on the number of credit cards issued in 2018. Majority of card payment transactions(724.4 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 144.5 millions or 24.92% compares to 579.9 millions in 2017. This is an encouraging growth since there is only a 4.41% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2018. The rest of the transactions, 0.5 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 1.1% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe. There is an increase of €3.4 billions or 20.99% to €19.6 billions(€2.00 thousands per capita) in 2018, compares to €16.2 billions in 2017. This also translates into €23.5 per card payment transaction, a decrease compares to €24.2 in 2017. Out of these transactions, €2.6 billions or 13.27% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.4 billions or 18.18% compares to €2.2 billions in 2017. This is an expected growth considering the increased in transactions volume. €16.9 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €3.0 billions or 21.58% compares to €13.9 billions in 2017, which is inline with the increase in debit card transactions volume. Credit card transactions in Hungary 2018 Quarterly Statistics

As at 31st March 2018, there are 9,010,810 payment cards issued in Hungary. The total payment cards is made up of 1,294,031 credit cards(a decrease of 123,233 or 8.70% compares to 1,417,264 as at 31st December 2017) and 7,716,779 debit cards. For the three months ended 31st March 2018(1st quarter), 166,650,775 payment transactions have been made domestically with a total value of HUF1,171,594 millions. And 143,963,912 payment transactions is paid with debit cards, with a total value of HUF1,009,134 millions.
Whereas 15,395,900 payment transactions have been made outside Hungary, with a total value of HUF170,070 millions. Out of this, 1,614,136 payment transactions is paid with credit cards, with a total value of HUF25,069 millions. And 13,781,764 payment transactions is paid with debit cards, with a total value of HUF145,001 millions.
Overall, 182,046,675 payment transactions have been made domestically and outside Hungary, with a total value of HUF1,341,664 millions. Out of this, 24,300,999 payment transactions is paid with credit cards, with a total value of of HUF187,529 millions. A total of 29,785 frauds cases reported in six months ended 30th June 2018, with a total loss of HUF793.184 million recorded.

As at 30th September 2018, there are 9,190,063 payment cards issued in Hungary. The total payment cards is made up of 1,312,438 credit cards(an increase of 7,133 or 0.55% compares to 1,305,305 as at 30th June 2018) and 7,877,625 debit cards. For the three months ended 30th September 2018(3rd quarter), 199,029,993 payment transactions have been made domestically with a total value of HUF1,396,042 millions. Out of this, 26,586,057 payment transactions is paid with credit cards, with a total value of HUF186,222 millions. Whereas 18,946,690 payment transactions have been made outside Hungary, with a total value of HUF222,294 millions. This is a good growth considering only a 3.27% increase on the number of credit cards issued in 2017. Majority of card payment transactions(579.9 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 126.1 millions or 27.79% compares to 453.8 millions in 2016. This is an encouraging growth since there is only a 1.62% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2017. The rest of the transactions, 0.5 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 1.0% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe. There is an increase of €3.4 billions or 26.56% to €16.2 billions(€1.65 thousands per capita) in 2017, compares to €12.8 billions in 2016. This also translates into €24.2 per card payment transaction, a marginal increase compares to €24.0 in 2016. Out of these transactions, €2.2 billions or 13.58% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.3 billions or 15.79% compares to €1.9 billions in 2016. This is an expected growth considering the increased in transactions volume. €13.9 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €3.1 billions or 28.70% compares to €10.8 billions in 2016, which is inline with the increase in debit card transactions volume. The total payment cards is made up of 1,314,649 credit cards(an increase of 3,491 or 0.27% compares to 1,311,158 as at 31st March 2017) and 7,647,456 debit cards. For the three months ended 30th June 2017(2nd quarter), 151,984,576 payment transactions have been made domestically with a total value of HUF1,066,641 millions. Fraudulent activity in card not present transactions recorded the highest fraud cases(8,062 cases with a total loss of HUF201.417 million). A total of 17,127 frauds cases reported in six months ended 30th June 2017, with a total loss of HUF480.074 million recorded.

As at 30th September 2017, there are 9,065,636 payment cards issued in Hungary. The total payment cards is made up of 1,344,064 credit cards(an increase of 29,415 or 2.24% compares to 1,314,649 as at 30th June 2017) and 7,721,572 debit cards. For the three months ended 30th September 2017(3rd quarter), 161,977,115 payment transactions have been made domestically with a total value of HUF1,132,606 millions. Out of this, 22,068,446 payment transactions is paid with credit cards, with a total value of HUF156,436 millions. And 139,908,669 payment transactions is paid with debit cards, with a total value of HUF976,170 millions.
Whereas 14,434,688 payment transactions have been made outside Hungary, with a total value of HUF168,429 millions. Out of this, 1,663,701 payment transactions is paid with credit cards, with a total value of HUF25,658 millions. And 12,770,987 payment transactions is paid with debit cards, with a total value of HUF142,771 millions.

A total of 26,858 frauds cases reported in nine months ended 30th September 2017, with a total loss of HUF776.415 million recorded.

Majority of card payment transactions(453.8 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 91.4 millions or 25.22% compares to 362.4 millions in 2015. This is an encouraging growth since there is only a 0.55% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2016. The rest of the transactions, 1.5 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.9% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe. There is an increase of €2.5 billions or 24.27% to €12.8 billions(€1.31 thousands per capita) in 2016, compares to €10.3 billions in 2015. This also translates into €24.0 per card payment transaction, similar to the figure in 2015. Out of these transactions, €1.9 billions or 14.84% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.3 billions or 18.75% compares to €1.6 billions in 2015. This is a good growth considering the 0.94% increase in the number of payment cards in 2015. Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2014, there are 359.39 millions of card payment transactions in Hungary(36.41 transactions per capita), an increase of 47.58 millions or 15.26% compares to 311.81 millions in 2013. This is a good growth considering the 0.70% decrease in the number of payment cards in 2014. Out of these transactions, 55.58 millions or 15.47% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 13.43 millions or 31.86% compares to 42.15 millions in 2013. The 3.06% increase on the number of credit cards issued in 2014 help spurs the growth of credit card transactions. This is an encouraging growth since there is a 1.60% decrease on the number of debit cards issued in 2014. The rest of the transactions, 1.51 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.76% to the EU total number of transactions.

This is an encouraging growth since there is a 1.06% decrease on the number of debit cards issued in 2013. The rest of the transactions, 1.13 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.71% to the EU total number of transactions.

A total of 6,838 frauds cases reported in the first half of 2013, with a total loss of HUF253.492 million recorded. Fraudulent activity in card not present transactions recorded the highest fraud cases(4,736 cases with a total loss of HUF157.783 million).

As at 31st December 2013, there are 8,968,431 payment cards issued in Hungary. The total payment cards is made up of 1,372,987 credit cards(an increase of 90,551 or 7.06% compares to 1,282,436 as at 30th June 2013) and 7,595,444 debit cards. For the twelve months ended 31st December 2013, 281,835,482 payment transactions have been made domestically(134,082,011 for the first half of 2013 and 147,753,471 for the second half of 2013), with a total value of HUF1,957,372 millions(HUF903,578 millions for the first half of 2013 and HUF1,053,794 millions for the second half of 2013). Whereas 28,246,427 payment transactions(10,723,686 for the first half of 2013 and 17,522,741 for the second half of 2013) have been made outside Hungary, with a total value of HUF354,508 millions(HUF152,104 millions for the first half of 2013 and HUF202,404 millions for the second half of 2013). A total of 13,786 frauds cases reported in 2013, with a total loss of HUF507.858 million recorded. Fraudulent activity in card not present transactions recorded the highest fraud cases(9,659 cases with a total loss of HUF322.847 million).


Credit cards in Hungary 2011-2012

As of 2012, Hungary has a population of 9.92 millions with a GDP(gross domestic product) of €98.97 billions. This translates into €9.98 thousands of GDP per capita. Hungary contributes 0.74% of the EU total GDP.

As at 31st December 2012, there are 8,908,450 payment cards issued in Hungary(0.90 cards per capita), an increase of 20,600 or 0.23% compares to 8,887,850 in 2011. There are 1,256,600 credit cards in Hungary as at 31st December 2012, a decrease of 49,360 or 3.78% compares to 1,305,960 in 2011. Debit cards decrease by 3,760 or 0.05% to 7,676,930 in 2012, compares to 7,680,690 in 2011. The balance 15,730 is for cards with a delayed debit function.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2012, there are 270.29 millions of card payment transactions in Hungary(27.25 transactions per capita), an increase of 38.75 millions or 16.74% compares to 231.54 millions in 2011. This is a good growth considering the 0.23% increase in the number of payment cards in 2012. Out of these transactions, 33.44 millions or 12.37% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 6.77 millions or 25.38% compares to 26.67 millions in 2011. The 3.78% decrease on the number of credit cards issued in 2012 does not affect the growth of credit card transactions. Majority of card payment transactions(236.39 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 32.02 millions or 15.67% compares to 204.37 millions in 2011. This is an encouraging growth since there is a 0.05% decrease on the number of debit cards issued in 2012. The rest of the transactions, 0.46 millions is for cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.68% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe. There is an increase of €0.63 billions or 9.83% to €7.04 billions(€0.71 thousands per capita) in 2012, compares to €6.41 billions in 2011. This also translates into €26.0 per card payment transaction, a decrease compares to €27.7 in 2011. Out of these transactions, €1.00 billions or 14.20% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.14 billions or 16.28% compares to €0.86 billions in 2011. This is an expected growth considering the transactions volume increased(even though the number of credit cards issued declined). €5.96 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €0.51 billions or 9.36% compares to €5.45 billions in 2011, which is inline with the increase in debit card transactions volume. The rest of card payments, €0.08 billions is paid by cards with a delayed debit function. Hungary total card payment value contributes a mere 0.35% to the EU total transactions value.

As of 2011, Hungary has a population of 9.97 millions with a GDP(gross domestic product) of €100.70 billions. This translates into €10.10 thousands of GDP per capita. Hungary contributes 0.77% of the EU total GDP.

As at 31st December 2011, there are 8,887,850 payment cards issued in Hungary(0.89 cards per capita), a decrease of 4,570 or 0.05% compares to 8,892,420 in 2010. There are 1,305,960 credit cards in Hungary as at 31st December 2011, a decrease of 61,970 or 4.53% compares to 1,367,930 in 2010. Debit cards increase by 127,560 or 1.69% to 7,697,280 in 2011, compares to 7,569,720 in 2010.

For 2011, there are 231.54 millions of card payment transactions in Hungary(23.21 transactions per capita), an increase of 22.08 millions or 10.54% compares to 209.46 millions in 2010. This is a good growth considering the 0.05% decrease in the number of payment cards in 2011. Out of these transactions, 26.67 millions or 11.52% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 1.86 millions or 7.50% compares to 24.81 millions in 2010. The 4.53% decrease on the number of credit cards issued in 2011 does not affect the growth of credit card transactions. Majority of card payment transactions(204.87 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 20.21 millions or 10.94% compares to 184.66 millions in 2010. This is an encouraging growth since there is only 1.69% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2011. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.62% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe. There is an increase of €0.65 billions or 11.28% to €6.41 billions(€0.64 thousands per capita) in 2011, compares to €5.76 billions in 2010. This also translates into €27.7 per card payment transaction, a marginal increase compares to €27.5 in 2010. Out of these transactions, €0.86 billions or 13.42% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.07 billions or 8.86% compares to €0.79 billions in 2010. This is an expected growth considering the transactions volume increased(even though the number of credit cards issued declined). The rest of card payments, €5.55 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €0.58 billions or 11.67% compares to €4.97 billions in 2010, which is inline with the increase in debit card transactions volume. Hungary total card payment value contributes a mere 0.34% to the EU total transactions value.

This is an unexpected growth considering the decrease in number of credit cards issued as well as the transactions volume. As at 31st December 2009, there are 8,729,040 payment cards issued in Hungary(0.87 cards per capita), a decrease of 156,420 or 1.76% compares to 8,885,460 in 2008. Out of these transactions, 25.51 millions or 13.90% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 2.38 millions or 10.29% compares to 23.13 millions in 2008. This is a suprising increase considering a significant 13.37% decrease to the number of credit cards issued in 2009. Majority of card payment transactions(158.05 millions) are paid by debit cards, an increase of 14.88 millions or 10.39% compares to 143.17 millions in 2008. This is an encouraging growth as there is only 0.96% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2009. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.58% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe, however, there is a decrease of €0.46 billions or 9.2% to €5.00 billions(€0.50 thousands per capita) in 2009, compares to €5.46 billions in 2008. This also translates into €27.2 per card payment transaction, a decrease compares to €32.8 in 2008. Out of these transactions, €0.76 billions or 15.20% is paid by credit cards, a decrease of €0.09 billions or 10.59% compares to €0.85 billions in 2008. The rest of card payments, €4.23 billions in value is paid by debit cards, a decrease of €0.38 billions or 8.24% compares to €4.61 billions in 2008. Despite the increase in debit cards and credit cards number of transactions, the total transactions value is lower because payment cards are used for increasingly smaller amount purchases. Hungary total card payment value contributes a mere 0.31% to the EU total transactions value.

As at 31st December 2008, there are 8,885,460 payment cards issued in Hungary(0.89 cards per capita), an increase of 333,950 or 3.91% compares to 8,551,510 in 2007. There are 1,737,770 credit cards in Hungary as at 31st December 2008, a slight increase of 35,070 or 2.06% compares to 1,702,700 in 2007. Debit cards increase by 299,420 or 4.33% to 7,214,110 in 2008, compares to 6,914,690 in 2007.

For 2008, there are 166.30 millions of card payment transactions in Hungary(16.57 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 31.51 millions or 23.38% compares to 134.79 millions in 2007. This is a healthy growth considering the 3.91% increase in the number of payment cards in 2008. Out of these transactions, 23.13 millions or 13.91% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 3.26 millions or 16.41% compares to 19.87 millions in 2007. This is a suprising increase considering only about 2% addition to the number of credit cards issued in 2008. Majority of card payment transactions(143.17 millions) are paid by debit cards, a significant increase of 28.26 millions or 24.59% compares to 114.91 millions in 2007. This is a significant growth as there is only about 4% increase on the number of debit cards issued in 2008. Hungary total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.56% to the EU total number of transactions.

Hungary has a low total card payments in value in Europe, however, there is a significant increase of €0.86 billions or 18.7% to €5.46 billions(€0.54 thousands per capita) in 2008, compares to €4.60 billions in 2007. This also translates into €32.8 per card payment transaction, a slight decrease compares to €34.1 in 2007. Out of these transactions, €0.85 billions or 15.57% is paid by credit cards, a significant increase of €0.10 billions or 13.33% compares to €0.75 billions in 2007. The rest of card payments, €4.61 billions in value is paid by debit cards, a significant increase of €0.76 billions or 19.74% compares to €3.85 billions in 2007. These growth are in accordance with the increase in debit cards and credit cards number of transactions. Hungary total card payment value contributes a mere 0.33% to the EU total transactions value.
