Woolworths customer engagement general manager Richard Umbers says the company has 13.5 million transactions a day and "already had a strong relationship with customers in a way that banks don't''. He says the reason to launch a reward-based credit card was to "reinforce the loyalty of our existing shoppers which is a significant business for us.'' Mr Umbers says Woolworths recognised the power the cards have in providing information on loyal customers' buying behaviour. "We do acknowledge there are some marketing opportunities there but we need to have the right controls in place,'' he says. WOOLWORTHS has taken its first steps into the world of personal finance, unveiling a credit card linked to a loyalty scheme as the opening gambit of its new Everyday Money division. Woolies has teamed up with HSBC and Mastercard to provide the card, a general-purpose credit card that can be used for purchases both within and outside Woolworths outlets. As an incentive to spend, cardholders will accumulate points that can be redeemed for shopping vouchers valid at any of Woolworths' businesses including Dick Smith, Dan Murphy's, and Big W. Chief executive Michael Luscombe said the credit card was merely an "entry point" for Woolworths into the financial services sector. Woolworths' ambitions to break into retail financial services have in past years been hampered by an exclusivity agreement with Commonwealth Bank, its partner in the Woolworths Ezy Banking joint venture, which failed to meet expectations on customer numbers. However, that alliance was dissolved last year, at the same time as Woolworths installed its own payment switch, allowing it to handle transactions with all banks rather than rely on a partner for processing. Mr Luscombe has previously discussed an expansion into financial products including general insurance but has yet to provide any details on timing. "Our wide-reaching customer base is the ideal target market for the credit card as we already transact with them every day,'' Mr Luscombe said "We are in the business of providing customers with the essential goods and services they need for their everyday lives," he said. "Our financial services offering will be an extension of that proposition." |
