1.Hotels, car hire, bicycle hire and deposits of all kinds Don’t use your Caxton card for the security card swipe when you check into a hotel or hire a car. Use any other credit or debit card for this and only use your Caxton card to settle the bill. This is because of something called ‘shadowed funds’. When a card is swiped you might not know that a ‘shadow’ is put on the card. Unlike any other card your Caxton card holds a prepaid balance and the shadow will stop you from getting to your travel cash. A shadow can last for up to 30 days. Use any other card for the security swipe and your Caxton card when the payment transaction is required. 2.DCC Dynamic Currency Conversion - Don't pay in Sterling! Sometimes you will get the choice of paying in euros/dollars or in sterling – always choose the local currency. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Retailers and ATMs may give you the choice and you might think that paying in sterling saves you money. It doesn’t. If you pay in pounds the retailer converts your payment at their exchange rate and you lose out. Remember to check the screen before authorising transactions. If the value is shown in pounds – ask that it is changed! Sometimes the option is put in the double negative "Are you sure you would not like to pay in Pounds?" The answer to this is "Yes" 3.Automated French Petrol Stations Automated petrol stations on the continent (not just France) usually take a security deposit of €120 (Normal approval) when you first swipe your card. No money actually leaves your account at this point, but your available balance is reduced by €120. A couple of days later (it can be up to 15 days), they will process a settlement increase for €120 which will raise your available balance by $120. Simultaneously, they will process a settlement decrease where they will remove funds from your card to cover the actual amount of fuel dispensed for example €45. In the period between the Normal approval and the Settlement decrease your account will appear to have been debited by €120, but it has not. Only when the Settlement decrease goes through has money actually left your account. This procedure is not unique to Caxtonfx cards or indeed any pre-paid card, all cards issued by any institution are treated in the same way whether they are debit, credit or pre-paid cards. 4.ATM use There is a maximum daily withdrawal limit of €500 or $750. However, you should be aware that some ATMs have their own lower limits particularly in small towns and remote villages. 5.Checking the balance Check online or by text 24 hours a day – you can also do it over the phone between 8.30am to 5.30pm GMT, Monday to Friday. 6.Get the best exchange rate Load your card when the rate is at its best – money loaded on the card is frozen at the rate of that day . 7.Changing your PIN Change your PIN at any UK cash machine. But don’t leave it until you are away – overseas cash machines won’t allow you to do this. Some ATMs may tell you that you will be charged for this service – you won’t be . 8.Better to be safe than sorry It might be obvious, but look after your card – you might lose some or all of the funds on it if it gets lost. A good back up plan is to take a secondary card and leave it in the hotel safe. That way, if your card does get lost or stolen you can block it and use your back up. |
How do I change my PIN number? It is only possible to change a PIN number at an ATM in the UK. Because your card holds a euro / US dollar balance, the ATM will flash up a message saying “You may be charged for this transaction do you wish to proceed?” you must select “Yes” in order to proceed and change your PIN. You will not be charged for changing your PIN. Is my Currency Card like a normal bank debit card or credit card? Your Caxton Currency Card is not a credit or charge card but it works like a debit card. It is a prepaid MasterCard® that carries a variable amount of money dependent on how much has been loaded on to it. Each time you use the card, the purchase amount is deducted from the available balance. How do I apply for a Caxton currency card? Simply click on the 'apply now' button, and complete the application form - it will only take a couple of minutes. You then need to send us a copy of your passport and a recent utility bill. You can either fax these to us on 0870 759 8420, email them to support@caxtonfxcard.com or post them to Caxton Cards, 28 Eaton Row, London, SW1W 0JA. I want to apply for a Caxton card for my child. How do I do this? You may apply for an additional card for any family member as long as they are 13 years of age or over. When completing your application, simply click on the "add additional cardholder" section of the form and complete their details. There is a charge of £5 for each additional card. Can I apply for euro and dollar cards at the same time? Yes you can apply for both cards on the same application form. When will I get my card? Once your application has been processed a currency card will be sent to you within 14 days. What do I need to do when I receive my card? You must sign your card as soon as it is received. To activate it simply click on the ‘cardholder’ link and follow the instructions to activate/load your currency card. Please note your card will only be activated when you load your card for the first time. Your £10 security deposit will be credited to your balance at this stage. How do I load money onto my card? Simply go to our website www.caxtonfxcard.com and click on the ‘cardholder’ link. Just follow the instructions to activate and load your currency card. Please note your card will only be activated when you load your card for the first time. Can I load more funds on to my card? Yes, you can reload your card free of charge by logging into the cardholder area of the website. Alternatively you can do it by telephone. Just call us on 0845 222 2639. You can also load your currency card via SMS Who can load money onto my account? Your Caxton currency card must be loaded from a UK debit card in your name. It is not possible to load it from any other account. The maximum load on your Caxton currency card is €7,500 / $10,000. Your card cannot be loaded more than twice in any one day. We reserve the right to refuse to accept any particular loading transaction. I have just added money onto my card, how long does it take for you to apply funds to my Caxton currency card? Once loaded, funds will normally be available for use within two hours. When do I get my PIN number? You will receive your PIN two to three days after you have received your card. We never issue your PIN number with your card. However, don’t forget that you select your own PIN as part of the application process which means you can set it to something memorable to you. I have just received my currency card and it does not work, why? You will need to load and activate your card when you receive it. Please go to the 'cardholder’ area of the website to do this. My card has suddenly stopped working, why? This could be for a number of reasons. 1. Your card is damaged, 2. You have no balance left on your Caxton currency card and need to load some more funds 3. We have blocked the card for security purposes or on your instructions 4. The card has expired; please check the expiry date on the card itself. What should I do if I get the choice to pay in pounds or euros? If you are at an ATM or somewhere where the bill is presented in pounds, not the local currency (i.e. euros or dollars), ask to pay in the local currency, not sterling. This is a new process called Dynamic Currency Conversion, or DCC. The merchant or retailer invites you to pay in sterling and then performs the exchange at an unfavourable rate which costs you money. Remember to check the payment terminal, if the amount is shown in sterling, ask that it is changed. Is there anything I should know about using my card? Do not use your Caxton card for security deposits when you check into a hotel or hire a car. Secure these with any other credit or debit card and only use your Caxton card to settle the bill. This is because of something called ‘shadowed funds’. When a card is swiped for security you might not know that a ‘shadow’ is put on the funds on that card. Unlike a credit card your Caxton card holds a prepaid balance and the shadow will stop you from getting to your travel cash. A shadow can last for up to 30 days. Use any other card for the security swipe and your Caxton card when the payment transaction is required. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call us. Do I receive a statement? No. However, you can view your current balance and transactions online free of charge on the www.caxtonfxcard.com website. What happens if I need to return an item I have purchased? Each retail store has its own return policies and will handle the returns in the same manner as any other MasterCard® transaction. They may credit your Caxton currency card, provide a cash refund or store credit. Can I have the balance on my Caxton card refunded to me? Provided that your Caxton card is valid and you have at least €10.00 / $15.00 on it, we will refund the unused value any time you like. To do so, simply call us on 0845 222 2639 or send us an e-mail using the "contact us" facility on the website. Please note that when we process your refund, we will charge a Refund Fee (see Fees section). We are only able to refund money back to the debit card that was used to load the currency card. The refund will take place 30 days from the most recent transaction date. An easier option might be to withdraw the money from a UK ATM, however this would be subject to a withdrawal fee (see Fees section) and a 2.75% cross border fee. Where can my currency card be used? You can use the Caxton currency card wherever there is a MasterCard® acceptance mark, including shops, restaurants, online or on the telephone. Can I use my Caxton card in the UK? Yes, your Caxton card will work in the UK but they are designed to be used in their denominated currency. So, to get best value use the euro card in the euro zone and the U.S dollar card in the United States or wherever U.S dollars are accepted. Using them outside the denominated currency would involve an extra foreign exchange. This exchange rate would be determined by MasterCard® rather than Caxton FX. Will I earn interest on my Caxton card balance? You will not earn any interest on any funds loaded on your currency card. What do I do if any of my personal details change? If your address, phone number or e-mail address change, you must let us know as soon as possible, by logging into your online account and updating the necessary sections. If we contact you in relation to your currency card, for example, to notify you that we have cancelled your card or to send you a refund, we will use the most recent contact details you have provided to us. Any e-mail to you will be treated as being received as soon as it is sent by us. We will not be liable to you if your contact details have changed and you have not updated your online account. How do I cancel my currency card? You have a legal right to cancel your currency card 14 days after you receive it. Under these terms and conditions, you also have the right to cancel your currency card at any time after this 14 day period. If your currency card is cancelled, we will immediately block your card so it cannot be used. You will not be entitled to a refund of money you have already spent on transactions authorised, pending or any fees for use of the card before it is cancelled or expires. You can cancel your currency card by sending an email to us using the "contact us" function on the website or by calling us on 0845 222 2639. I will not be travelling again for a while and want to block my card - how can I do this? You can have your card status changed to ‘deposit only’. This will mean that you will be able to load your card at anytime, but no purchases can be made. Before you go traveling again we will then just re-open the card and its ready for use. To have this done, simply give us a call. What happens when my Caxton card expires? Your currency card will be valid for 2 years. As you may have experienced with other bank or credit cards, we will send you a replacement before your current card expires. When you receive your replacement card, contact us and we will activate it and transfer any outstanding balance from your old card. However, we will not issue a new card if you tell us in writing at least 28 days before the date your currency card expires that you do not want to receive a replacement. What happens if my card is lost or stolen? You should treat your currency card like cash in a wallet. If it is lost or stolen, you may lose some or all of the money on your card. As a result, you must keep your Caxton card safe and not let anyone else use it. If you are issued with a PIN, you must immediately memorise it and destroy the notification. You must keep your PIN secret at all times. Do not write it down or reveal it to anyone. We recommend that you check the balance on your card regularly online. If you do lose your card or it is stolen or you suspect that your card has been used by someone, you must tell us as soon as you can by calling our 24 hour lost and stolen helpline on 0845 222 2639 or from outside the U.K +44 (0) 207 201 0526. We will then cancel your card. We will ask the police to investigate any suspected misuse of your card and they may need more information and assistance from you. We will refund the amount of any transactions which the investigations show are not authorised by you, provided you have kept your card and PIN secure. However, if the investigations show that any disputed transaction was authorised by you or you have not kept your card or PIN secure, we will not refund the transaction amount. What are the fees for using my currency card? We have tried to limit our fees as much as possible to ensure that we can provide the very best value for money for our clients. There are NO monthly fees and NO transaction fees when you use your card in shops and restaurants. Unfortunately there are some fees that are unavoidable. Please see the section of our website for a full list of fees. In order to help you get the very best from your Caxton card we have created a section of the website dedicated to help you avoid charges. |
